Getting the First Tooth
Your baby will probably get that first tooth sometime between the third and sixth month, but even before the first tooth sprouts up, it’s important for you to start taking care of your baby’s gums, using a clean, wet, soft washcloth. You should also schedule your child’s first trip to Smiles Dental Studio in Sacramento, CA within six months after getting the first tooth, as advised by the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD).
The First Trip to Smiles Dental Studio
During the first visit, Dr. Khan and her staff at Smiles Dental Studio will share tips on how to protect your baby’s teeth from cavities and tooth decay, as well as identify any problems that might sprout up including crowding and any abnormalities in the number of teeth. Your child will naturally feel a bit anxious about being at the dentist for the first time and to ease those fears, it’s good to bring a blanket or a favorite toy. How your child reacts to the dentist during this first visit may dictate their feelings about going to the dentist for the rest of their life. Dr. Khan and her professional staff will do everything they can to make your child feel as relaxed as possible.
Brushing Your Child’s Teeth
Use a moistened washcloth to clean your child’s teeth at first, then start using a soft bristled toothbrush once the majority of the teeth have come in. While the role of fluoride in protecting your child’s teeth is integral, you actually do not have to use toothpaste until your child reaches the age of two. Once you are ready for your child to incorporate toothpaste into the dental regimen, make sure that you only use a pea-sized amount. Make sure that you brush your child’s teeth immediately before going to bed and never send a child to bed with a bottle of milk or any other sweet drink. Make sure that you replace your child’s toothbrush every two months.
